Erika Scheer is a fourth generation wood carver with formal apprenticeship training. She was born in Chicago to immigrant parents, her mother from Mexico, her father Hungary. Erika’s father brought with him a family legacy, master woodcarving. The family then moved to Naples Florida, it was then she took an interest and soon became an apprentice. As she progressed the body of her works were commissions. She carved for client’s private homes in Southwest Florida. Having moved to Waupun, Wisconsin she has now turned her attention to her own vision.
She explores in materials of basswood, cherry, walnut, with applied colors and gold/silver leafing. She carves by hand with traditional chisels and mallets. Her primary focus is in the art of low relief as it acts more like a “canvas.” She breaks the utilitarian notions of wood as frames for art and makes it the center. Wood, she insists, must claim a piece of the wall. It is here where she allows the wood to carry a story.
Erika’s original works have been exhibited in multiple juried shows throughout Wisconsin. Chippewa Falls, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, Wausau, Plymouth, Stoughton, Fort Atkins to name a few. Notably she was juried into the Against the Grain Exhibition in Saint Petersburg Florida, and renowned The Piedmont Craftsman Art Fair in Winston Salem North Carolina.
