Critically-acclaimed guitarist Willy Porter returns to the historic Thrasher
Willy Porter makes a return visit to the historic Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake for a Saturday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m.
In the early 1990s, Porter traveled in his Volkswagen selling discs out of the trunk, mesmerizing audiences with his guitar chops and original tunes. In 1994, he released his second independent CD entitled Dog Eared Dream that marked Porter’s artistic growth from his constant touring and a more developed songwriting perspective. The song “Angry Words” became a top-10 staple on Triple AAA radio stations around the country. The cd highlighted his pop songwriting sensibility and also his acoustic guitar work that would grow into a style uniquely his own – a mixture of Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Richard Thompson and Lindsey Buckingham.
Since then, Porter has released five additional critically acclaimed cds. How To Rob a Bank, the esteemed guitarist/singer-songwriter's latest release, showcases his continued growth as a songwriter and recording artist. Porter offers a rich blend of salt and sugar with tracks that move easily from rough-hewn electric edges into soulful irony with equal aplomb. Jeff Giles of Popdose.com says, “It’s another solid entry in a discography full of them, and one of the smarter, more durable albums of grown-up music we’re likely to get this year.”
In addition, he has collaborated with Carpe Diem String Quartet on a release titled "The Mealies - Live at BoMA" on which seven of Willy's previously released songs were beautifully rearranged with the quartet for a stunning new take on his fan's favorites. He has also toured extensively throughout European and the US with artists such as Rickie Lee Jones, Tori Amos and The Cranberries.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Accommodations provided by the Heidel House Resort and Spa.
