Paul Dietrich began writing music for his 5+4 project in late 2019, and the group’s first (pandemic-delayed) performance came in late 2021. The group combines the instrumentation of a traditional jazz quintet (trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, drums) with a string quartet (two violins, viola, and cello). This was a new frontier for Dietrich, having never written for strings, but the larger format was not new. After two live performances, Dietrich recorded his 5+4 music in early 2023, set for release later this year. The band includes saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, pianist Jason Kutz, bassist Brian Courage, and drummer Jon Deitemyer.
