Carlos del Junco appearing at Thrasher

Harmonica maestro, CARLOS DEL JUNCO, along with his band, will be performing on the evening of Saturday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake.  As a leading pioneer of the 10-hole diatonic harmonica, this world champion harmonica virtuoso carves an original niche that defies categorization.  del Junco expands the range of musical credibility for what is still considered by many, a fringe folk instrument.

With a name that loosely translates to “of the reeds,” it seems as though it was destiny for Carlos del Junco to become a musician.  However, rather than lending his talent to a saxophone, a clarinet or perhaps another reed instrument, del Junco chose the harmonica to showcase his talent.  In fact, his unique sound has been compared to that of a reed instrument.

In concert, Carlos transcends the boundaries of blues and jazz and anything in between.  His command of the instrument is absolute.  An eclectic palette of musical styles cover a wide spectrum from blues, Latin, Tex-Mex, country, New Orleans funk, swing, traditional or contemporary jazz, to the occasional African, hip hop and ska-flavored rhythms.  Carlos fuses his respect for tradition with an innovative, adventurous and modern approach, playing with all the nuances and subtleties of a classical virtuoso to the edgier sounds of a blues rocker.

Carlos is touring in support of the critically acclaimed award-winning BIG BOY cd, and his current CD, up and at 'em, produced by Grammy winner Joe Chicarrelli.  This latest offering matches Carlos' musical dexterity to a stellar lineup of world-class talent.

Carlos started touring
Canada in 1996 and is a welcome addition to the concert circuit at home and abroad, which includes numerous concerts in Europe and the USA.  Carlos has just returned from the Trossingen Blues Factory Festival in Germany and recently showcased for the Southern Arts Federation in Charlotte, North Carolina

del junco has received numerous awards over the years, including most recently; Winner of the Toronto Blues Society's Maple Leaf Blues Award for 2003 Harmonica Player of the Year.  One of his career highlights was a standing ovation while opening for Ray Charles at The Hummingbird Centre for the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival in 2003.
