Dallas Brass and Green Lake High School to perform

Green Lake High School Band will have an exciting opportunity on Wednesday, April 21, to practice and perform with one of America’s foremost musical ensembles, Dallas Brass. Thrasher Opera House, along with the special support from Drs. John & Kay Zwiacher and the Green Lake State Bank, is thrilled to be bringing this renowned brass band to Green Lake for a day of workshops for the Jr/Sr High students followed by a regular evening performance at the historic Thrasher Opera House. Thirty of the GLHS students will be joining Dallas Brass on stage that evening to perform a few select songs. Band Director, Jon Roti Roti, has been busy practicing with the students, preparing for them for the upcoming workshops and for what will prove to be a very moving evening performance.

“This premiere brass band will delight audiences, young and old alike, with many familiar favorites, as well as a few funky and creative tunes such as the ‘Tuba Rap’.  We saw them perform the rap song, as well as many patriotic songs, when they showcased at a recent Midwest Arts Conference, and I have to tell you, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house”, says Roby Irvin, Executive Director of Thrasher.

The band, founded by Michael Levine in 1983, has established a unique blend of traditional brass instruments with a full complement of drums and percussion, which creates a performing entity of extraordinary range and musical challenges.  The Dallas Brass repertoire includes classical masterpieces, Dixieland, swing, Broadway, Hollywood and patriotic music.

According to Mr. Levine, "a Dallas Brass concert is intended for the entire family.  Our ideal audience has a range in ages from 5 to 95.  Our goal is to entertain and enrich by playing great music, while showing our audience how much we enjoy what we do."

In addition to their solo engagements, the Dallas Brass also appears with symphony orchestras nationwide. Symphonic credits include the Cincinnati Pops conducted by Erich Kunzel, New York Pops conducted by Skitch Henderson, and the Philly Pops conducted by Peter Nero.  The Dallas Brass has performed at Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and has toured overseas to Europe and the Far East.

The ensemble has released five recordings: Debut, Dallas Brass II, A Merry Christmas with Brass, Windborne, and Nutcracker. The Dallas Brass has a strong dedication to working with young musicians, frequently going into the public schools to present clinics and workshops for students of all ages.
