Annual post-Thanksgiving concert features jazz ensemble VIVO
VIVO, the lively contemporary jazz-pop bossa-samba music ensemble and 2015 WAMI winner for Jazz Artist of the Year will be performing on Friday, November 27 at the historic Thrasher Opera House as part of another in Thrasher's long-standing Thanksgiving Jazz Series hosted by Janet Planet.
"Vivo has been making the music scene in Milwaukee for a couple of years now. And when they perform, each and every note they play comes magically alive. But the members of the group have more than made their mark on the Midwest collectively for more than a century.
The rundown starts with Warren Paul Vito Wiegratz. From Sweetbottom to Streetlife (with variations in between), Wiegratz is a staple who performs at Milwaukee Bucks home games and just about every venue that has or ever offered live music to its customers. Wiegratz, who has played his soulful sax rendition of the National Anthem in just about every stadium, brings a saxophone, flute and melodica to the mix. What Warren does with the latter is far from child’s play. Wiegratz’s performance with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra at the Pabst Theater in January was considered a tour de force.
Vocalist Pam Duronio is one part Billie Holiday, two parts Dinah Washington with a little Sassy Sarah Vaughn thrown in for good measure. Fans of great phrasing will truly appreciate Duronio’s artistry whether she’s singing in English, Portuguese or Klingon. Pam also lays down a saucy bed of percussion with bongos and a variety of other noisemakers, some of which have been made from produce in the islands.
Duronio’s life partner, Tim Stemper, completes the triumphant triumvirate with his masterful work on the guitar. Stemper peppers his solos with classical, flamenco and rock riffs to the delight of the audience."
