Paul Dietrich Quintet CD release concert at Thrasher
Dietrich is a Chicago-based trumpet player, composer, arranger, and educator. Constantly absorbing music from a wide range of influences, Paul creates music that synthesizes the sounds of classic and modern jazz, Western classical music, folk, progressive rock and other diverse genres. His work for jazz ensemble, "Convergence," was commissioned by and performed by the Ripon High School Jazz Ensemble in February.
Equally comfortable as a performer and a composer, Paul honed his skills by earning his Bachelor's degree in Trumpet Performance and Jazz Studies from Lawrence University (2010) and a Master's degree in Jazz Studies from DePaul University (2012). As a trumpet player, Paul has played in all sorts of formats and is a freelance musician in Chicago and an active participant in Madison's jazz scene. He has improvised as a soloist with the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble, the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Paul also enjoys venturing away from the jazz scene and has performed in a variety of other ensembles including brass quintets, orchestras, wind ensembles and salsa bands.
Paul has received acclaim for his writing for large and small ensembles. As a student, he wrote several compositions for the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble, including his arrangement of Phil Woods' "Pairing Off,” which was recorded on the Jazzed Media release Right to Swing by Phil Woods and the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble (2013). Of this recording, leading Philadelphia-based jazz critic website allaboutjazz.com praised it as "the sizzler of the disc, with a pronounced performance by the trumpeter.”
