Grammy-nominated Jazz Pianist to play at the Thrasher

The Thrasher Opera House and the Green Lake Festival of Music are combining forces to bring the Fred Hersch Trio to the Thrasher stage on Saturday, August 31. This is the first time that the two organizations have co-presented a concert. "It makes a lot of sense; Hersch is an elegant, lyrical pianist with a touch as sensitive as that of the finest classical pianists. I think he’ll appeal to all who appreciate excellent music of any style,” says Maria Dietrich, Thrasher development director. Jeffrey Harkins, Executive director of the Green Lake Festival of Music, adds "I can’t wait to hear Fred Hersch in the intimate setting of the Thrasher, with its fine acoustics that will pick up all the subtleties of his playing.”

As a solo pianist (he was the first artist in the 75-year history of New York's legendary Village Vanguard to play week-long engagements as a solo pianist), Hersch has fully lived up to the praise of the New York Times who, in a featured Sunday Magazine article, described him as "singular among the trailblazers of their art, a largely unsung innovator of this borderless, individualistic jazz – a jazz for the 21st century.” Nominated as Jazz Pianist of the Year 2013 by the Jazz Journalists Association, Hersch is widely considered the most celebrated and prolific jazz pianist of his generation. His most recent solo CD, Alone at the Vanguard, was nominated for two 2012 Grammy Awards. The Trio’s new double album, Alive at the Vanguard, named one of the Best CDs of 2012 by Downbeat Magazine, has received rave reviews such as "Pianist Fred Hersch reaches some rarefied heights on this wise trio recording.” — Karl Stark, Philadelphia Inquirer, and "...one of the finest piano trios of our day” — The Boston Globe.

This concert is presented in collaboration with the Green Lake Festival of Music. This project is supported by grants from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, and from the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation. The Thrasher Summer Jazz Series is sponsored by HORICON BANK. Accommodations provided by the Heidel House Resort & Spa.

Tickets are only $25 and available at the Thrasher office, Knowledge Emporium, Green Lake Bank (Green Lake); Pick N’ Save, Ripon Drug (Ripon); Twister (Princeton) or by calling (920) 294-4279 or online at www.thrasheroperahouse.com.
