Legenday Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks make a rare stop in the Midwest
The legendary Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks will make a rare appearance in the Midwest at the historic Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake on Saturday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. Hicks is truly an American original. Since the early 1960s, Hicks has deftly blended elements of Swing, Jazz, Folk and Country music to create the appealing sound he sometimes calls "Folk Jazz".
Hicks' counter-cultural appeal, which has twice landed him on the cover of Rolling Stone, has always been rooted in his songwriting. The lyrics of his songs range from the simply sublime to the sublimely ridiculous, all presented with his uniquely skewed and inscrutable touch. His irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid-back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit will make most who listen fans for life. He's a snappy dresser, too!
Among his latest works is Tangled Tales (2009), a more-than-worthy addition to Hicks' already massive body of work. It is an irresistible nod to Hicks' undeniable musical legacy, and a potent reminder of all of the musical inspiration that this Great American Songwriter has spawned. Revered by and also having collaborated with such legendary artists as Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Better Midler, Brian Seltzer, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet, among others -- Dan Hicks serves up his unique fashion, attitude and swagger that are embodied in his outlaw eccentricity and totally unique sound.
2010 saw the long-anticipated release of a Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks Christmas CD, and it was all Hicks fans had hoped for - and more! "Crazy For Christmas" was lauded by NPR's Fresh Air, the NY and LA Times, and The Washington Post. Called one of the Best of 2010 by the Village Voice, "Crazy For Christmas" also landed on Billboard's Heatseekers Chart.
Today, Dan tours worldwide with an updated version of the Hot Licks, and occasionally gigs at various jazz venues in the San Francisco Bay Area, as a vocalist with his swingin' combo Bayside Jazz. Not only does Dan Hicks continue to delight his long-time fans, he has earned the attention of a whole new generation of music lovers.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Accommodations provided by the Heidel House Resort and Spa.
