Ike Sturm Ensemble is showcased in this years' Thanksgiving Series
Thrasher Opera House, along with Janet Planet/Stellar Records, is pleased present the Ike Sturm Ensemble from New York as part of the annual Thanksgiving Series: "Bringing the outside into our Community," on Friday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. The concert, hosted by Janet Planet, will be performed in the intimacy of the historic Thrasher Opera House in beautiful downtown Green Lake.
Bassist, composer and bandleader, Ike Sturm, combines his original music with multimedia design by his sister, artist Madeline Sturm, for a performance that Singer & Musician Magazine’s Robert Lindquist states, "…is a blending of mind, spirit and music—and of voice and instrument—that is at a level beyond the aural. You bask in it, hoping to soak up every splendid nuance and color. Inventive and infectious."
Ike grew up in a musical home, learning from his father, Fred Sturm, renowned jazz composer, arranger and educator. He has been fortunate to perform with artists such as Gene Bertoncini, Bobby McFerrin, Ben Monder, Kenny Wheeler and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He has played on four "Downbeat" award-winning recordings as well as composer Steve Reich's releases on Canteloupe and Nonesuch Records.
Ike studied jazz and classical bass and composition while earning Bachelors and Masters degrees at the Eastman School of Music. He currently serves as the music director for jazz at Saint Peter’s Church (the "Jazz Church") in New York, where he performs and composes original music for weekly jazz services. Recently, the Church commissioned Ike to write a jazz mass for 50 voices, strings and sextet. The recorded work, planned for release in 2008, will feature Misty Ann Sturm, Ingrid Jensen, Loren Stillman, Ryan Ferreira, Ted Poor and Grammy award-winning soloist Donny McCaslin.
The New York-based Ensemble fuses diverse influences into a unified, contemporary style integrating jazz and world rhythms in richly textured original music. The unique voices of each musician speak to audiences within a saturated environment of original artwork, painted and designed by Madeline Sturm to complement the sound and form of the music.
"A soft hum rumbles through the pillars of these casual tracks of jazz fusion mixed with a dash of intelligent pop. Drawing from stylistic colors reminiscent of Sting, Pat Metheny and Dave Holland, this group together sends out gorgeous landscapes of contemplative, introspective, rainy-day jazz fusion. But don't think for a minute that these tunes park themselves in one spot and hunker down. These matured, cozy tracks each have an internal momentum; they extend and explore outwardly with melodic lines that reach and question, rhythms that slowly burrow into the earth and harmonies that curl and unfold with ever-changing color." – CDbaby
